Fixed layout ebooks for Amazon

Kindle Files
Convert from PDF or export InDesign files ready for upload to sell through Amazon.

CircularFLO exports directly to Amazon formats for both reflowable ebooks and fixed-layout. For fixed-Layout ebooks we convert to Kindle Format 8 (KF8).

There are limitations to the KF8 format. Fixed-Layout Amazon ebooks only support:

  • Table of contents
  • Pinch and Zoom
  • External Hyperlinks (e.g. internal links for tappable table of contents)
  • External Hyperlinks (e.g. links to websites)

An example of one of the thousands of CircularFLO made ebooks available can be found on Amazon The Type Project Book.

Download a sample to a device to view the table of contents and to click the on page hyperlinks.

For reflowable ebooks CircularFLO converts to the Kindle Package Format (KPF)

Fonts in Amazon reflowable files

Kindle Files
Text in Amazon reflowable ebooks is 'live' and can be altered by the reader.

It is possible to embed custom fonts known as 'publisher fonts' into the ebook which are used when the book is first opened.

To embed fonts successfully in reflowable Amazon ebooks it is important to style your text using InDesign Paragraph Styles. Any fonts that are used only as 'overrides' and not using actually InDesign text styling will be substituted.

Note that PostScript fonts are not support for use with live text in ebooks and should be replaced or converted to embedded text.

Reflowable ebooks for Amazon

Kindle Files
CircularFLO uses Kindle Previewer to convert and preview your reflowable ebook for Amazon.

With Kindle Previewer 3 on you Mac, CircularFLO will convert the reflowable ebook in Kindle Previewer as part of the ebook creation process.

The reflowable ebook file created for Amazon uses the Kindle Package Format (KPF). This is the recommended format and allows us to legally include fonts into your Amazon ebook.

As Amazon recommends in their documentation:

Using KPF files allows your eBook to easily format and fit all Kindle devices. It’s a go-to method for avoiding any formatting issues.

What are the benefits of using Kindle Create?

  • Kindle Create takes care of typesetting your eBook so that it works well on all Kindle devices and applications, including tablets, phones, and E- readers.
  • Easily create a table of contents page and Kindle Interactive TOC for your eBook.
  • Insert and place high quality images in your eBook.
  • Preview how your eBook looks before publishing.

After export, the KPF file can be opened in Kindle Previewer

Using Kindle Previewer

Kindle Files
The free Kindle Previewer 3 app is required for converting to Amazon File formats.

In order to make files with CircularFLO that are ready for sale with Amazon you will need to download and install Kindle Previewer 3.

It is free to download and use Kindle Previewer 3. The current version for Mac can be found here - https://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/?docId=1000765261 Kindle Previewer

CircularFLO automatically uses the Kindle Previewer 3 in the background to convert ebook publications as KF8 for fixed layout and KPF for reflowable ebooks.

For Fixed-Layout a single export with CircularFLO creates both the Fixed-Layout EPUB3 and the Amazon file KF8.This is the best method for Amazon file creation and is a better approach than using the same EPUB export (despite what you may have heard!).
