This check shows that the bleed area is set to 5mm on all sides.

A bleed refers to printing that goes beyond the edge of the sheet before trimming. The bleed gives the printer a small amount of space to account for movement of the paper, slight variations in cutting, and other such factors. The purpose of the bleed is to ensure that no white space is visible around the edges of your document after it is trimmed to size.

This check verifies whether the document has been set up with a 5mm bleed. Search for the check ‘TRIMSBLEED’ to verify that all objects on the page reach the bleed guide.

Choose File>Document Setup to set a bleed area of 5mm.

This check is making sure that the spot colours used in InDesign are matching the expectations required by Bonnier.

‘Spot Colours’ are used to add to the CMYK print process and can be used to add eye catching extra inks and special finishes such as foils and varnishes. They can also be used to indicate physical production techniques such as cutter guides and embossing.

The use of spot colour extra inks and special finishes adds to the cost of production and so spot colours are typically reserved for the covers files of books that have the budget for them!

The use of the PANTONE colour library is required for inks that are not made from the CMYK process colours. The Pantone colour reference should be explicit in the spot colour name. The easiest way to do this is to use PANTONE colour mode when adding a spot colour swatch.

Note: Any spot colours e.g. Pantones are not split onto separate layers and are included with the main CMYK graphics.

The naming of special finishes indicates the finish that is to be used and selected from this list.

Spot colours are named with these identifiers. Additional special finishes are identified by adding the word SPECIAL to the start of the layer and spot colour name along with a description e.g. SPECIAL-GLITTER.

Each special finish spot colour is added to a separate, named InDesign layer. All content on the special finish layer uses a spot colour swatch set to the same name as the layer and is set to overprint.

Overprinting

All special finish text and images are set to overprint. This means that images can be changed during a print run without affecting the underlying base images and artwork.

Apply Overprinting to pixel images using the InDesign Attributes panel

Bitmap images (referred to as ‘Black and White’ images in the InDesign links panel) and Grayscale can be set to overprint using InDesign.

Pixel images used on the text layer are saved as either Bitmap or Grayscale in Photoshop.

To apply overprint to pixel images it is important to select the content of the image frame rather than the image frame itself. Do this using the InDesign direct selection tool or with a graphic frame selected choose (InDesign Object menu > Select > Content)

With an appropriate image selected in this way, apply overprinting using the InDesign Attributes panel (Window > Output > Attributes)

After selecting an image with the direct selection tool tick the checkbox to apply overprint fill.

It is possible to apply overprinting using the Illustrator Attributes panel (Window > Attributes).

After selecting illustrator artwork with the direct selection tool tick the checkbox to apply overprint fill and/or stroke.

Spot colours used in others apps such as Photoshop and Illustrator are OK to use. Any imported graphics should also use the same naming.

Note: GreenLight is not currently checking vector artwork from Illustrator

Adobe InDesign help

This check is making sure that the InDesign document is named in the agreed way that identifies its contents.

File names are an obviously important way to know what a file contains, but they can also be used to help with automated exporting, archiving and influencing other GreenLight checks.

When everyone uses the same naming conventions everybody involved in your workflow, both now and in the future, has a better chance of finding what they want and knowing it is complete.

All files in our workflow are named in this way and order:

[Book-Code-or-ISBN]_[Section]_[Page-Range]_[Doc-Name]_[Language].[File-Type]

E.g. 9780123456789_INT_001-023_The-Doorstep-Sandwich_UK.indd is the UK internal section for pages 1-23 of a book named ‘The Doorstep Sandwich’.

Eg. 9780987654321_COV_Weekend-Activity_US.pdf is the US cover PDF file for a book named ‘Weekend Activity’.

Allowed Characters

Use only letters (a-z, A-Z), numbers (0-9), dashes and underscores when naming files and folders.

Underscores are used to indicate different sections of the filename. Regular dashes (using the hyphen or minus key) indicate page ranges and are also used to replace spaces and other characters.

Book Code

Every filename starts with a book code which identifies the team and book that the files belong to. Book Codes are supplied by production and may contain letters, numbers and a dash.

To add or amend the book code in GreenLight use the GreenLight Run menu > Add / Amend book info for document command.

Section Identifier

One of these short codes indicates the section of the book that the InDesign document or output file relates to.

PRE

Prelims. Optional preliminary pages that may contain alternative client publisher and imprint information.

INT

Internal Section. Main internal pages of book which may include imprint information or follow a prelim section. Will contain endpapers if book is self ending.

END

Endpapers. Printed paper used to secure to the case to the book block during the manufacturing process.

ILLUS

Illustrations section inserted as a ‘plate section’ for mono books.

TRANS

Translation Files. A set of internal pages generated by GreenLight for use only by co-edition publishers.

EXTRA

Extra Sections. For novelty or complex sections and any other sections not covered by the above identifiers.

Jacket identifiers

PLC

Paper Laminated Case. A printed cover glued onto a hardcased book. Identifier also used for PLC cut flush.

COV

Cover. Typically wraps across front, spine and back of a paperback book.

JKT

Paper Jacket. A paper jacket that wraps around the hardcased book. Identifier also used for Paper Jacket with French Folds.

FLEXI

A printed cover onto a medium weight board. May also have flaps and usually requires endpapers.

PIC

Printed Inside Cover. At same size as the outer cover.

WIRO

Exposed Wiro Binding. Coated metal wires bind loose leaf documents together.

CLOTH

Cloth Spine. Exposed or overlaid spine at front and back.

Page Ranges for internal pages

For all internal and prelim documents the page range is included in the filename after the INT, PRE or ILLUS document identifier. Page ranges are NOT added to the filenames of other section documents.

The first page number and last page numbers are added to the filename and are separated by a dash.

If a single document contains all internal pages then continue to add the first page number and last page number to the file name.

All pages numbers in filenames have three digits. E.g. page one to page eleven becomes 001-011. Books with over one thousand pages can use four digit page numbers.

GreenLight will compare the file name with the actual page numbering used in the document.

Work In Progress name / Book name

This area of the filename can be any text which helps identify the file to those working on it. This is for work in progress and may be changed if required. It may be removed or replaced with the book name for final files and when exporting.

Language Identifier

A language code is added to the end of the filename.

Files using international British English use UK. American English files use US. All other languages use the same three letter code used in ONIX. Common ones are listed below and a full list is here.

US

American English.

ENG

Transatlantic English language intended for both the UK and US printings.

UKUS

If a single file contains different text for the UK and US printings then use UKUS.

FRE

French

GER

German

ITA

Italian

If a single file contains different text layers for both the UK and US printings then use UKUS.

Suffix

The suffix is the final part of the file name used by the computer to indicate the file type and should remain unaltered. e.g.

This check is making sure that the layers used in InDesign are matching the layout structure required by Bonnier.

Layers are an important method of separating different objects on the InDesign page and can be used for splitting text which changes with different languages from common images in a co-edition print run.

The full list of layers that are expected and allowed are different for covers / jacket files and inside pages. They are

Layering for inside pages:

TEXT

All objects that are able to edited, moved or removed by a translator. Usually text objects but can also contain annotation lines, tint panels, text wrap objects.

The full name of the translation layer contains the language being used. e.g.

TEXT-UK - International English

TEXT-US - Americanized English

TEXT-SPA - Spanish

TEXT-GER - German

Typically only one text layer is included in an InDesign document but it is possible to have multiple text layers if required.

CMYK

This layer contains that are consistent between each translation.

This layer can contain any combination of colour objects and placed images and may include transparency effects and blending.

It should not contain any translatable text, lines of text wrap areas.

The common images layer is named ‘CMYK’ and is the bottommost layer in the layers panel

GUIDES

One or more layers with names starting with the word GUIDES can be added if required whilst a document is work in progress or final. Anything added to a guides layer is not typically included when creating final PDF files. If required, a PDF of the guides layers present in a doucment can be chosen by choosing to output specific layers.

Guides layers are included when preparing translation material.

Guides layers that remain in the final InDesign documents are included in archive file sets.

NOTES

One or more layers with names starting with the word NOTES can be added if required whilst a document is work in progress or final. Anything added to a NOTES layer is not included when creating final PDF files or translation material.

Therefore it is important to be sure that the notes layer does not contain any objects intended for print.

Notes that remain in the final InDesign documents are included in archive file sets.

Layering for jackets and covers:

Covers and jackets are not printed in a co-edition print run and are likely to include special print finishes such as foil and spot lamination.

Finishes are separated out onto different layers in InDesign and named to describe their contents.

Expected layer names for cover and jacket files ONLY include "FOIL", "DIELINE", "SPOTUV", "MATT", "GLITTER", “DEBOSS” and "EMBOSS". Other layer names start with the word “SPECIAL” e.g. “SPECIAL-GLITTER”
